The Jesmond – History

The Jesmond Picture House opened in May 1921 and was the most lavish of a handful of cinemas in Newcastle in the 1920s.

The building was influential in Jesmond’s culture for more than 70 years until its doors closed for the last time in 1993 – falling into ruin, beyond repair, and finally demolition.

The entirely new development, The Jesmond, is a fitting and magnificent tribute on the site of the original building, and reflects in a contemporary way the ground-breaking Jesmond Cinema.
